From 1st April 2008 the law could be changing as to how business rates on empty commercial buildings have to be paid. The amount of relief given is going to be reduced significantly.
Currently, empty commercial buildings such as shops and offices receive a three month period of exemption after which 50% rates is payable. Empty industrial buildings are exempt and no rates are payable.
Government incentive
As an incentive to bring empty properties back into use, increase the supply of premises to let and reduce business rents, the Government has decided to reform the way business rates are charged.
If the new law is approved it means that, after an initial three month exemption period for commercial properties such as shops and offices, and a six month exemption period for some industrial properties such as factories, warehouses, workshops and stores, business rates will have to be paid IN FULL.
Exemptions
There are still some premises that won't have to pay business rates at all. This will apply to any empty buildings owned or used by charities or community amateur sports clubs; empty buildings with a rateable value below £2,200; or if a building is in poor condition and cannot be economically repaired.
