Moving Home - Housing Benefit

Housing Benefit is only paid for the property you are living in. There are some circumstances when you may be able to have your rent paid on two properties.

Housing Benefit can be paid for up to four weeks on a property you have vacated if:

You are still liable to pay rent for your notice period
You have moved to a new home other than a temporary home and can prove that it was unavoidable to pay rent on two homes

Housing Benefit may be due if you have to pay rent from the date your tenancy starts but you are delayed in moving in.

The delay must be due to:

Adapting the dwelling to meet the needs of a disabled member of your family
You are waiting to hear about a Social Fund application connected with the home, and you have a family member aged five or under, or you are receiving one of the following premiums in your benefit, Pensioner, Enhanced Pensioner, Higher Pensioner, Disability, Severe Disability or Disabled Child Premium.
You became liable to make payments whilst in hospital or residential care.

To qualify for help you must apply for help within four weeks of moving into your new home.
