Gypsies and Travellers in Ellesmere Port & Neston

Ellesmere Port & Neston Borough Council has a partnership approach to Gypsy and Traveller issues.

The Cheshire Chief Executive Advisory Group on Gypsies and Travellers (CCEAG) was set up 2003, it is a multi-agency group made up of representatives from;

The group is chaired by the deputy Chief Executive from Ellesmere Port and Neston, Brenda Harvey. It recognises and accepts the rights of Gypsies and Travellers to live a nomadic way of life and recognises Gypsies and Irish Travellers as distinct racial groups. The CCEAG also accepts the need to balance the rights and responsibilities of both the settled community and the Travelling community.

It also acknowledges the Government's circulars/guidelines and the statutory duties with regard to Gypsies and Traveller's. The Commission of Racial Equality and the government recognise Gypsies and Irish Travellers as distinct minority ethnic groups, and that they are considered to be among the most excluded and vulnerable groups in society.

The group has employed a Cheshire Gypsy/Traveller Co-ordinator based in Halton covering all partnership area. The post is a three year temporary contract funded by the local authorities in the partnership. The post was created to carry out work on behalf of the Advisory Group in line with the Government's circulars/guidelines and the statutory duties with regard to Gypsies and Travellers.

The CCEAG on behalf of the partnership authorities commissioned a Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment (GTAA) which is available from July 2. The study was undertaken by Salford Housing & Urban Studies Unit - Salford University. You can download a copy of the report and its summary by clicking on the link below:

The CCEAG has also been part of the GTAA for the whole of the North West which has been led by the North West Regional Assembly.
