What do councillors do?

Councillors are the elected and unpaid representatives on the borough council. They are there to represent your views and make decisions.

Paid council officers carry out the wishes of the councillors and run services. They also advise the councillors, for example on legal and financial matters. They are the local equivalent of the civil servants who work for central government.

As well as decision making, councillors have a monitoring role, but much of their time is taken up in the local community. Many are involved with community and outside bodies and representing individual constituents in grievances involving the council.

Each councillor represents an area of the borough and its people. These areas are known as wards. In Ellesmere Port & Neston, those wards with higher population areas are represented by two and sometimes three councillors.
