Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council's Environmental Protection Unit regulates emissions from certain industries. The law that supports this work is aimed at preventing or reducing emissions wherever possible and make sure that those emissions that are permitted are controlled. The legislation requires the operators of certain industrial and other installations to obtain a permit to operate, and once an operator has submitted a permit application, the council then decides whether to issue a permit. The permit contains conditions which control emissions from the process and therefore prevent pollution exceeding acceptable levels.
