Bereavement Services - Choosing a Memorial

Because a memorial is a lasting testament and tribute to a person's life, it is important to choose it carefully.

A hasty decision made while still in great distress, often results in later regrets, so it can be sensible to wait - and to spend time with your family in selecting a suitable memorial.

When you are ready you are advised to obtain several quotations for the type of memorial you have in mind, do not be afraid to ask to see samples of the work previously supplied.

There are a variety of memorial designs that you and your family can choose from. For example; you may wish to choose a Memorial Vase, Tablet, Angel figure, Headstone, Full kerb.

You are advised that the grave owner is the only person who can authorise a memorial mason to carry out works on their behalf. Before a memorial can be erected, the grave owner must give written permission to the Mason.

The Borough Council only allow approved and registered Memorial Masons to work on your behalf. All Memorial Masons who wish to work within the Cemeteries must be first registered with the Council to do so.

You will find an approved list of memorial masons on the Bereavement Services homepage. The approved memorial mason's are aware of the cemetery Rules and Regulations that encompass the type of memorial allowed, size and installation requirements and they should advise you accordingly.

Your appointed memorial mason is then required to submit the proposed work to the council for approval. Upon approval of the memorial application the mason is provided with a approval permit document, this document allows for him to make an appointment to carry out the memorial work.

The installation of the memorial is monitored by cemetery personnel, to ensure that your memorial is installed to the council's required specification. Upon completion of works the memorial mason must provide you with a written 10-year workmanship guarantee. This guarantee covers standards of acceptable work, materials and construction of the memorial.

As grave owner you are fully responsible for the maintenance of your memorial. You are advised to take out an appropriate insurance that will cover all eventualities such as accidental damage, vandalism, stolen items, graffiti, and storm damage.

In addition you are also responsible for the upkeep of your memorial to ensure that it remains in a safe condition for the life of the Exclusive Right of Burial term.

You are advised that the council have an inspection regime in place whereby they inspect all memorial stones within a five-year period. This will mean that we hope to inspect your memorial every five years; if in this time your memorial is identified as unstable we will advise you accordingly.
