Lawned Burial Areas

Within the Cemeteries a separate lawned burial area has been designated solely for the interment of cremated remain caskets. The area accommodates all denominations. The lawned policy outlined above will apply.

  1. The grass cutting maintenance programme commences in March and picture of the lawned burial areanormally finishes in October each year. During this time the lawned burial areas are cut each week.

  2. The lawned burial areas are very different from the traditional burial areas within the cemetery, the significant difference relates to the maintenance standards provided by the council and the subsequent approval for placing of memorial testaments.

  3. It is important that you become familiar with this policy before you and your family decide on what you wish to place on the plinths provided.

  4. We do understand that memorial testaments are a private matter but please consider the elements and the openness of the burial areas. From experience fragile unsecured items can easily be misplaced, we would not want for you to be upset at finding these items missing when you next visit your loved ones grave.
  1. The lawned burial areas are cut on a weekly basis to a high standard. To achieve this standard special grass cutting machines are utilised to maintain the burial areas.

  2. The lawned areas are also provided with rows of concrete plinths, these are provided to enable you to place your memorial testaments upon. To retain the lawned policy and to enable the council to provide a high standard of maintenance no item of whatever description should be placed on the lawned area/grave space.

  4. Graves that have been opened for a full burial will continue to settle for approximately six months. During the settlement period cemetery personnel will remove the turf, level the grave and replace the turf as and when necessary. You are advised that graves can settle unexpectedly, if this happens immediate arrangements will be made to level the grave as soon as possible.
  1. As you can appreciate the placing of any unauthorised items on grave spaces can and does set a wrong precedent for others to follow. Families who purchase graves within the lawned sections do so on the understanding of what is to be the proposed appearance.

  2. It is an absolute stipulation of Council Policy that no item of whatever description be placed upon the actual grave space. These items include wooden crosses, fencing, kerbing, bedding plants, spiked vases, flower displays, windmills, football scarves etc, either as a temporary or permanent measure.

  3. Items that are removed from the grave space will be placed on the plinth or behind the headstone, if there is no room for these items then they will be removed by cemetery staff and kept for one month from the date of removal. All items removed are documented for reference purposes.

  4. The only exception to this policy is the temporary grave marker provided by the council, funeral flowers, Christmas wreaths or anniversary or birthday flowers. You are advised to contact the Bereavement Services Manager prior to considering placing any item upon the grave space. Approval of any such request will be at the discretion of the Bereavement Services Manager.
  1. One of the duties of cemetery personnel is to ensure that the lawned policy is adhered to. They are required to monitor the lawned areas on a daily basis and to take the appropriate action.

  2. You are advised that cemetery personnel will remove any item found on the grave space and if there is room they will then place the removed item on the plinth or behind your memorial stone.

  3. If there is no room for these items then they will be removed by cemetery staff and kept for one month from the date of removal. All items removed are documented for reference purposes.

  4. To avoid accidents and to retain a well-maintained appearance, damaged, broken and discarded items found on all burial areas will be removed and disposed of.
