Mans best friend is his dog, or is it? Many people list barking dogs; dog fouling; stray, abandoned, dangerous & out of control dogs as key local concerns.
Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council's Dog Warden Service receives nearly 2000 complaints a year about these issues and this unwelcome trend is rising. It is because of this that the council is promoting responsible dog ownership in the community. This is simply a request to be Sensible, Responsible and Neighbourly. The council is willing to do all it can, but is relying on support from residents for the scheme to be effective.
- What you can do? - There are several things that everyone can do to encourage responsible dog ownership within our community. Co-operation is needed between dog owners and non-dog owners alike in responding to this community problem.
The vast majority of dog owners in the borough do act responsibly, but here are a few reminders of the simple steps that you can take to ensure you are a considerate owner.
- Ensure that your dog is tagged with his name and address. This will mean someone can contact you if your dog goes " walkies" by mistake.
- Keep your dog under control and keep it on a lead, when out.
- Remember that if your dog is found out alone, the dog warden will assume it is a stray and collect it. You will then be charged up to £40 plus kennel fees.
- Be a good neighbour; CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG. Take a "poop scoop" out with you.
- Be a good neighbour - TRY TO LIMIT YOUR DOG'S BARKING. Ask your neighbour whether your dog barks a lot when you are out. If the answer is "yes" try the following:
- Leaving a radio on - but not too loud.
- Leave it with its favourite toys.
- Leave it something to chew.
- If these simple solutions do not work you can contact the dog warden for further advice.
- If your dog is difficult to control then take it to dog training / obedience classes. Again the dog warden can advise.
- Keep bitches at home when in season. Their scent is easily identified by male dogs and followed to their origin. Please ask for further advice on this subject.
- Remember NO DOGS except Guide Dogs, are allowed in children play areas.
