Food Safety and Hygiene

Many aspects of food hygiene and safety are part of the work of the borough council's Food Safety Team. The team can help and advise on the following issues:

Registration of food premises
Inspections of food premises
Investigating food complaints and food hygiene complaints
Providing advice on food safety issues such as BSE, Genetically Modified Foods etc.
Food Sampling
Health promotion work including the Food Safety and Customer Care Award Scheme
Licensing of Butchers shops
Authorising street trading consents
Further food safety and food hygiene information
Food poisoning and infectious diseases
Scores on the Doors is a scheme that allows members of the public to view the results of the last food hygiene inspection and so enable them to make an informed choice of where they buy and eat food.

As from January 1st 2006 there is a new requirement for food businesses to have documented food safety management procedures based on HACCP ( Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) principles. The Food Standards Agency have published an information pack " Safer Food Better Business" designed to help caterers comply with this legislation (Regulation (EU) 852/2004).
