All food premises are inspected to check that they comply with the many food safety laws and to ensure that the food they produce is safe to eat.
During inspections potential hazards are identified and any problems brought to the attention of the proprietor. The matters are discussed during the inspection and confirmed in writing following the visit. If more serious problems are identified, or it is felt that the informal approach will not work, more formal action is taken to resolve the problems:
| Improvement notices can be served (following a notice of intent to serve) which clearly states what the problem/offence is, what must be done to put it right and the time period allowed for compliance. Failure to comply with the notice is an offence, which will normally result in prosecution. | |
| If something is found during an inspection that poses an imminent risk to health, an emergency prohibition notice can be served. In the most serious circumstances this will immediately close down the food business and force it to remain closed until conditions improve. | |
| Serious breaches of the food safety legislation may result in evidence being gathered and the proprietor prosecuted for failing to comply with the law. |
