Q. Where can't I smoke?

A. On 1 July 2007 Smoking was banned in virtually all enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and workplaces.

Q. What about the staff smoking room?

A. From 1 July 2007 indoor smoking areas are no longer allowed.

Q. What about vehicles?

A. Work vehicles are required to be smokefree if used in the course of paid or voluntary work by more than one person, even if used at different times. Under the new law public transport is smoke-free. Smokefree vehicles need to display a no-smoking sign in each compartment of the vehicle in which people can be carried. This must show the international no-smoking symbol at least 70mm in diameter (as shown above).

Q. What about working from home?

A. Any part of a private dwelling used solely for work purposes needs to be smokefree if it is used by more than one person who does not live at the dwelling or if members of the public attend to deliver or receive goods or services.

Q. What about smoking at home?

A. You can smoke at home, but any enclosed or substantially enclosed part of a premises shared with other premises, such as a communal stairwell or lift in a block of flats, is required to be smokefree if it is open to the public or if it is used as a place of work.

Q. Who is responsible for enforcing the new law in England?

A. Local Councils are responsible for enforing the new law.
