Stray & Abandoned Dogs

Dogs should not be allowed to roam unsupervised in public. Legally the dog warden can seize any dog that is found alone in a public area. If the dog can be identified by a tag or other form of identification it will, if possible, be returned to the owner and a warning issued.

If you see a stray dog contact the owner, if known, and advise them of their pet's whereabouts. Alternatively, contact the dog warden who will collect it within normal office hours.

If the dog appears aggressive, DO NOT APPROACH ITcontact the dog warden on 0151 356 6734.

If a dog cannot be identified it will be impounded at the local authority kennels and released to the owner on payment of a statutory charge of £25 plus any kennelling and administration fees, should you not be able pay on the day of collection you will be invoiced for £40 at a later date. To arrange collection of a dog, owners should contact the dog warden.

Re-homing Unwanted & Stray Dogs - The Dog Warden cannot re-home your pet. The council do not run a re-homing scheme or take in unwanted pets. All unclaimed dogs at the local authority kennels are found new owners through Heswall Animal Rescue.
Heswall Animal Rescue is a charitable organisation set up to protect and re-house unwanted pets. It is run by volunteers and is dependent on financial donations from members of the public. If you would like to volunteer your time, make a financial donation, or offer an unwanted dog a home, please contact Heswall Animal Rescue.

Stray Dogs Found Out of Office Hours- 5p.m. - 10p.m. - As of the 6 April 2008, Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council have sole responsibility for stray dogs at all hours.

The police will no longer take stray dogs from members of the public. The police will retain their duties with regard to dealing with dangerous dogs. If you wish to report a dangerous dog please phone 0151 355 4066.

The 0151 356 6789 number should only be used if you have a stray dog in your possession.

If you wish to report a stray dog roaming in the area please phone 0151 356 6734 Monday to Friday between 8.30am to 5pm all details will be taken and the Dog Warden will respond.
