The Local List of Buildings of Architectural or Historic Interest

Converted barn at Thornton Mews, Childer Thornton

In Ellesmere Port and Neston there is a Local List of Buildings of Architectural or Historic Interest. This is a register that recognises the special architectural or historic interest of buildings within the borough that are not statutorily listed.

Background to the local list

From time to time, buildings within the borough that are of historic or architectural interest, but are not statutory listed, have come under threat of demolition or damage.

On a number of occasions, efforts have been made to achieve statutory listing. However because these buildings are often "too new" they are not listed by the Government, yet these structures are buildings of quality and an important part of the local scene both in terms of history and architecture.

With this in mind the borough council has prepared a Local List of Buildings of Local Architectural or Historic Interest.

The list of buildings of local architectural or historic importance was first compiled in 1995 and has since been updated.

The list includes buildings such as the Ince Building at Thornton Research Centre, the Sea Wall at Parkgate, the Water Pumping Station at Hooton, and Berwick Road School.

The list has had some success, particularly saving the Berwick Road School from demolition, and also securing higher quality redevelopment schemes at other locations e.g. the Manor Hospital, Little Sutton, and the Hooton Pumping Station.
