The Open Spaces Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) provides detailed evidence to support the protection and new provision of open spaces in the district, and guidance on the type and quality of open space.

It is a requirement of the new planning system that planning policies are subject to a sustainability appraisal to ensure they make a positive contribution towards sustainable development. A copy of the Sustainability Appraisal of the Open Spaces SPD can be viewed by clicking below:

The first stage in the document's preparation was a sustainability appraisal scoping report. Sustainable development is the fundamental objective of the planning system.

It is essentially about balancing social, economic and environmental needs. Under recent reforms to the UK planning system, all new planning policies and strategies should be subject to a sustainability appraisal.
