This page is a guide to how to sort your rubbish for recycling, which boxes to use and what you should and shouldn't put in your bins and boxes.

Recycling bins and boxes vary according to whether you live in a house or a flat.

Your green bin is for general waste that can't be recycled
Pink sack

All plastic bottles & tubs such as:

  • Milk cartons
  • fizzy drinks
  • margarine tubs
  • yogurt pots
  • All cans

Please "wash 'n' squash" container before
putting into your pink sack

  • Pressurised gas lighter fuel containers
  • empty aerosols
  • Plastic carrier bags
  • cling film

Carrier bags and cling film can be recycled at 'bring to' recycling sites.

Your pink sack is for plastic pots and tubs, as well as all cans
Green box
  • Newspapers
  • junk mail
  • magazines
  • catalogues
  • Cardboard,
  • paper food cartons such as those used for orange juice and UHT milk,
  • envelopes
  • Christmas wrapping paper

Your green box is for newspapers, junk mail, magazines and catalogues

Grey box

Please use the plastic divider to separate cardboard and glass

  • Clear/coloured glass jars & bottles,
  • card packaging - cereal, pizza & frozen food boxes
  • Clean clothing including hats, coats, belts and paired shoes (please place in a black sack and leave next to your grey box)

Remember: Please flatten boxes - if box is too big for the grey box please either tear it up or take it to one of the 'bring-to' sites

  • Boxes containing broken glass will not be taken
  • Recycle brown corrugated card at a 'bring-to' site (unless you are in the area covered by the Corrugated cardboard collection pilot scheme.

Your grey box is glass jars and bottles and cardboard. Please use the divider provided.

Brown bin

 

Green garden waste such as:

  • Grass cuttings
  • flowers
  • bark
  • leaves
  • hedge clippings
  • windfalls
  • twigs
  • small branches

Please place waste directly into the bin - don't use a bag

  • Food waste
  • vegetable peelings
  • soil
  • turf
  • stones
  • plant pots
  • paper
  • pet waste/bedding
  • nappies
  • vacuum cleaner contents
  • textiles
  • carpet
Brown recycling bin - for garden waste

Residents of flats have communal wheelie bins for each of the above waste categories. Use the same guidelines for what to put in them.
